How does a piece of classical music become “classical”? In this bonus PDW, Robert Kapilow provides fascinating insights and brilliant demonstrations of What Makes It Great? He introduces composers and their music and helps participants hear the works in a new and exciting way. Using his astounding gift for observation and an animated teaching style, Kapilow takes us into the frame of mind of a composer while pointing out the specifics of his/her technique and approach to composition. It is said that genius is reflected in the ability to make the complex simple and accessible. Well, at the end of a What Makes It Great? workshop with Kapilow, we feel as if the composers he introduced were our next door neighbors. The workshop includes an entertaining discussion interwoven with live musical examples performed on the piano by Kapilow. Following the PDW, teachers will feel empowered and at ease to discuss those composers with their students.
No formal musical training is needed to enjoy this workshop. Robert Kapilow’s What Makes It Great? Series is part of the Cerritos Center for Performing Arts’ program for the public. This workshop is not linked to an Educational Performance and is offered at no cost to teachers as a bonus PDW for your own enjoyment.
